Kettering Vintage 1-2 City of Peterborough Vintage

Tom Sellers crowned a good weekend as he became the third generation of his family to score following Andy and Lewis on Saturday. Sadly his audacious through the legs bouncer was only a consolation as Kettering succumbed to a Peterborough side who usually go deep into these competitions. With just the bare eleven, and an average age well over 50, Kettering were determined to give a good account of themselves against a side containing a few ex National League players.
Although Peterborough dominated the early skirmishes it was Kettering who had the first real sighted on goal when a Tim McDowell fired over. Kettering were then indebted to keeper Barry Coe to keep the scores level with a Smart save but he was powerless to stop Peterborough going ahead when a ball was fired through a crowded circle. Half time saw Kettering confident they could cause an upset. Their chances looked slim one minute into the second half when a clearance ricocheted off a forward and rebounded into the goal. Kettering driven on by Neil Freeman, Paul Brooker and skipper Tony Heath pressed for a goal and following a scrambled short corner Sellers’ unusual strike caught out the Peterborough rear guard. With time running out Kettering looked in vain for an equaliser but time caught them out.
The teams retired to the clubhouse for an excellent lunch and unusually these days intermingling between the teams. We wish Peterborough every success in the competition and we will see who we draw in the Tier 3 competition we now drop into.
