In the end it was a game too far as a Kettering Over 50s narrowly failed to beat Marden Russetts in their Cup semi final.
The long trip to Kent saw Kettering slowly out of the blocks but resolute defending meant that the hosts initial charge was rebuffed. Kettering eventually gained a foothold in the game and in bright sunshine the game turned into a midfield battle but with Marden creating the better scoring opportunities.
The teams turned round 0-0 at half time and a untimely tackle saw a Marden player take a short break. A short corner gained by the hosts was deflected home to give the hosts the lead. As sunshine turned to hail, then rain Geoff Elliott and the same host player saw yellow for a coming together. Kettering then had their best opportunity when Tim McDowell appeared to be fouled in the D. No penalty was awarded and McDowell rushed shot went narrowly wide. The Marden midfielder was lucky to escape further censure after a crude tackle on Tom Ward. Marden played out time to gain their place in the final.
