Cup dream over for another year.

Kettering’s cup adventure came unstuck at the quarter final stage as they ran into a strong Shrewsbury side.

With twelve players due to a couple of injuries Kettering ran into a county side masquerading as a club side. Unsurprisingly they were a bit too strong for a gallant Kettering side made up of only club players. Kettering held on well in the early exchanges despite doing the majority of the defending but Tom Sellers had a good shot saved that could have given Kettering a surprise lead. Shrewsbury eventually broke the deadlock when a defensive mistake gave a forward an unmissable opportunity. Shrewsbury were unlucky not to go further ahead when a good strike was inexplicably ruled out. The second half followed a similar pattern; a goal early in the half killing of the game as a contest and a late goal putting a gloss on the performance leaving the score line 3-0 and that was about right. It’s worth noting that Kettering had by far the oldest player on the pitch when Scott Mulligan was replaced for fresh legs from 80+ veteran Bill Greenwood.

A good cup run that came to an end at about the right stage.
