Grammarians 2 - 4 Kettering 2nds

Kettering 2nds travelled to Wellingborough for an early Saturday morning start to play Grammarians. Kirsty Smith lead the team in a thorough warm up to prepare for the game ahead and then Kettering set up to combat the well renowned Grammarians attacking force of Jade Sartain and Felicity Goodliffe. Sue Russell appointed to man to man mark Goodliffe and Sophie Smart doing the same job on Sartain. Kettering started strongly and had a number of attacks, however it was from a Kettering attacking short corner that Grammarians broke and with Kettering's defence stretched Sartain fired home. Kettering continued to press and equalised from a subsequent short corner strike by Michelle Tanser. Tanser then struck home again to allow Kettering to take the lead just before half time. The second half initially saw Kettering dominating the play and one of many fine moves eventually saw Helen Keyworth slot the ball home. Kettering then seemed to switch off thinking the game had already been won and Sartain pounced on this will a second goal for Grammarians. Kettering regrouped and restructured for the final part of the game and when Chris Rowland-Jones intercepted the ball in midfield and fed Keyworth on the right Kettering flooded forward. Keyworth found captain Shez Coe in the circle who drew the keeper before slipping the ball through to Lexi Webb who capped her man of the match performance by coolly slotting the ball home for her first goal of the season. The game was at last definitely over with Kettering sealing a well-deserved victory. Kettering play their final game of the season next Saturday when they travel to Moulton to play Northampton Saints 2nd Team on the water-based pitch.
