Kettering 2nds 4 - 0 Oundle 1st

Kettering 2nds faced high flying Oundle 1st team at home after a disappointing display the week before. Kettering knew Oundle would be strong in attack and set up to weather the early onslaught. Kettering defended solidly as a team led by Chris Rowland-Jones and Louise Storey at the back. Wave after wave of Oundle attacks were snubbed out with Lexi Webb, Ellie Darnell and Isabel Ringrose working tirelessly in midfield. Kettering gradually began to build attacks of their own down the right hand side with Helen Keyworth leading the way. Kirsty Smith as a lone striker up front was on hand to win Kettering their first short corner of the game which was eventually converted by Darnell after some fine interplay between Michelle Tanser and Shez Coe. Oundle were shocked at this outcome and Kettering hit them again quickly with another short corner this time being converted by Sue Russell, who never misses from that angle. The second half saw Kettering go from strength to strength and begin to dominate the game. Tanser finished off a fine solo run from the half way line by slotting the ball passed the Oundle keeper and Darnell got her second to put the result beyond doubt. Kettering played out the rest of the game, with Sophie Smart returning from knee surgery helping the defence to play in a calm and controlling manner. The clean sheet was a pleasing as the four goals against such strong opposition. It was difficult to choose a man of the match as all the players deserve credit for such a fine performance but scoring two goals, the first and last in the game, Darnell took the honour. Kettering face another tough test next week away to Daventry, but after a performance like today they will travel with added confidence.
