Kettering push high flying Wellingborough all the way.

KETTERING LADIES 3RD TEAM v WELLINGBOROUGH 1st TEAM
Saturday 3rd November 2018

Kate Metcalfe Ellie Mulligan Kate Randle Charlotte Cattell Megan Newlyn Lucie Freeman Julia Telford Evie Wharf Claire Jones Liz Metcalfe Ola Bednarczyk Lydia McCarrick Natalia Bednarczyk Simran Kaur

Wellingborough opened strongly and put Kettering under intense pressure for the first ten minutes of the game and the defence Ellie Mulligan, Kate Randle and Charlotte Cattell were forced into early action. Skilful defending ensured a clean sheet as they defended wave after wave of attacks from the fast Wellingborough forwards.

Kettering gradually settled into the game and made telling inroads into the Wellingborough half themselves with Kate Randle and Julia Telford distributing the ball well to their midfield and forwards. Outstanding work from youngsters Natalia Bednarczyk, Megan Newlyn and Ola Bednarczyk enabled Kettering to penetrate the Wellingborough “D” and there followed a number of very useful attempts on the Wellingborough goal. Great pick-ups and distribution from Liz Metcalfe and fine interchanges between Ola and Natalia eventually paid off as they won a well-deserved penalty corner. A good injection from Ellie Mulligan was stopped well and a skilful interchange within the “D” found Ellie in perfect position on the post to slot the ball home.

Wellingborough stepped up their attack and some slack marking led to Wellingborough equalizing despite Kate Metcalfe pulling off a number of excellent saves before the ball was eventually crossed to the far post cleverly wrong footing her and giving her little or no chance to save the goal. With Kettering on the back foot and starting to lose shape the Wellingborough attack continued and unfortunately two more goals followed in quick succession.

Not to be outdone Kettering showed great spirit as they opened the second period with numerous forays into the Wellingborough half. Good tackles from Julia Telford in midfield and hard work from Lucie Freeman, Lydia McCarrick and Evie Wharf kept Kettering in the game and after some blooming brill play in the “D” between the forwards a goal seemed likely. Simran Kaur and Claire Jones pushed forward and Charlotte Cattell made some good interceptions opening up the defence as she drove forward with great determination. Unfortunately, despite their very best efforts they could not find the back of the net and Wellingborough put the final result beyond doubt as they netted their fourth and final goal.
