A very cold morning gave rise to doubts as to whether Kettering Ladies 4s would be able to play their friendly against Grammarians. The absence of any sign of the opposition 15mins before the pushback time made us think we had maybe missed a message about cancellation, but eventually a team turned up. They proved to be strong and experienced with a hard hitting style which was difficult for Kettering to cope with and intimidating particularly for the junior players. Missing 3 of our regular defenders and being under pressure from the start, the defence did well to hold Grammarians to just one goal scored before half time.
After half time as the weather deteriorated and icy rain set in, Grammarians scored again from a penalty corner. Players got colder and hands got numb, making Kettering less able to cope with the pressure and unfortunately a further 3 goals were scored by Grammarians before the final whistle brought welcome relief. This was a game which we will want to put behind us as we focus on the forthcoming league matches, where we hope to regain our composure - and for the weather to be a bit kinder to us!
