Kettering battle hard
Strong Towcester a bit slick for Kettering.
Kettering 4s continued their pre-season warm up with a friendly against Towcester 3s. A number of regular players were unavailable and we had 4 players for whom it was their first match in club hockey. We were up against a strong team who have played together for some time and won the summer league so we knew it would be tough. The first 10 minutes saw us giving away the ball from 16 yard hits and Towcester took advantage and scored 3 quick goals. However, we learnt quickly the need to use the width of the pitch and some good passing enabled us to keep possession more and avoid Towcester scoring again in the first half.
The second half started in pouring rain and with only 10 players. We conceded more early goals before regaining our composure and again beginning to put together some good patches of play. Every member of the team made a good individual contribution and our new young players are all showing promise, with Holly Chapman showing maturity in her play and flexibility in different positions and both Megan Newlyn and Eve Butler making some great runs up front. Our other two new members, Lydia McCarrrick and Evie Wharf both gained confidence through the match, with Lydia working hard mid-field and showing some great skills and Evie adding value particularly when she moved back into defence in the second half.
So, although the scoreline was disappointing, there is great potential and much to look forward to in the coming season, as we learn to work together as a team and blend our new talent with our 'old'.
