All the speculation about Maria Sharapova and her failed drug test has caused ripples in the Kettering Hockey ranks. WADA, the World Anti-Drugs Agency, are currently investigating whether Kettering have been taking performance UNenhancing drugs as they crashed to their tenth straight defeat. Finishing bottom of the table does not look good but the sprirt of the team has been excellent and games have invariably been close and often hinged on simple moments that have generally not gone Kettering's way.
This was the case on Saturday when a mad one minute in the second half saw Kettering throw away the chance of a point against local rivals Oundle.
Oundle opened the scoring mid way through the first half with a mildly controversial goal from an aerial into the D. Kettering equalised with Mark Hawkins hammering the ball through the goalkeeper. The second half seemed to be dwindling away until Jake Coleman was caught in possession at the top of the D and an Oundle forward fired home. Less that a minute later Oundle diminutive playmaker smashed an unstoppable shot home to seal the scoring. A clumsy tackle by Graham Smart saw a later penalty which was well saved by Barry Coe in the bottom left hand corner. Paul Donnelly marshalled the back four expertly and young Lewis Pywell is growing in stature with every game and a big season is expected from him next year.
