Kettering too strong for March in top of table decider

Kettering secured back to back promotions with a great win against March, a team who knew they had to win to stand any chance of being promoted themselves. March has won the previous encounter 3-1 but Kettering created plenty of chances in that game and were unlucky to lose and knew that March would present the hosts with plenty of opportunities. The game started with March flying out of the blocks and putting Kettering under serious pressure. Ross Mathieson saw yellow and Mark Hawkins green as the hosts were temporarily reduced to nine men. Keeper Barry Coe produced an outstanding save to deny March and this turned the tide in the hosts favour. A short corner was initially saved and Grant Carlin was on hand to give Kettering the lead. Andy Sellers then scored from a short corner to settle the hosts nerves. Another green card for Hawkins and a similar one for March saw the first half finish 2-0.
Kettering knew that March would throw everything at them at the start of the second half and so it proved. A fine finish from March's centre forward reduced the lead and the game became quite tense. Coe again produced a fine save to deny the visitors and when March then suffered a yellow card for a poor tackle this gave Kettering the chance to use their superior fitness to turn the screw.and Ross Mathieson put the game out of March's reach and set Kettering's promotion charge into overdrive. Lewis Pywell scored to make it four and Pat Cawley capped a fine game by applying the finishing touch to make it 5. Grant Carlin saw green late on as Kettering controlled the ball to see out time and take a deserved victory and a promotion to Div 2N.
It has been an excellent season an Kettering have the chance to seal the title when they host Cambridge City Veterans on Tuesday 3rd April at Kimbolton School under the lights.
Many thanks to Ben and Andy for their excellent coaching and all the club members and panel umpires who have umpired us at home this season, it is much appreciated.
