Cambridge South 2-1 Kettering

Kettering travelled to champions elect Cambridge South and came away with heads held high knowing they had provided their hosts with one of their tougher assignments of the campaign. South boasting the best midfield in the league dominated the early phases but Kettering held firm. A short corner drag flick was comfortably dealt with and from another short corner Kettering spring a lightning counter attack and were unlucky not to score themselves. The pressure eventually told when a South player found himself unmarked ten yards out and made no mistake. Kettering were unfortunate not to equalise when Ross Mathieson crashed the ball against the bar from a break down short corner. South extended their lead then a short corner was deflected by Mathieson onto keeper Barry Coe, the ball looping behind the pair to be volleyed in by a waiting forward.
With the wind behind them and knowing they were playing well Kettering played very much on the front foot in the second half. Dom Cusk and Pat Cawley were not quite able to convert crosses but a well worked short corner midway through the half saw Grant Carlin find the influential Mathieson who fired home. There was time for Mathieson to see yellow for a rather unsubtle foot. As much as Kettering tried to force an equaliser they had to settle with the knowledge that they pushed one of the better sides in the league to the limit. They can take plenty of positives from this performance as they wrap the season up with a home game against Norwich City.
