Greg, Wallace goals contribute to 5 - 0

After a well fought game last week, KM2s were unsure of how the game against Saints 3s would go - Ricky even admitted post-game he wasn't confident of a result - and the game began with a 10 minute periods of unrelenting Saints pressure, with Kettering barely able to get the ball out of their half. The defence throughout this period and actually the whole game was superb and most Kettering attacks started from build up play at the back. After Kettering found their feet, the rest of the half was very end to end. Kettering's first short corner of the game gave them the lead, Adam Duell slammed the ball into the goal to make the score at half time 1 - 0 to the good and leave Saints with the wind knocked out of their sails.
Kettering tired but were willing to work even harder and this determination paid off massively: new boy Greg Winkel scored two, Wallace Cairns scored his first goal for the second team and Oliver Smith managed one - making the score 5 - 0. Incredible team play at both ends of the pitch - including some surging runs from Archie Colwill and effortless skill from Richard Lashbrooke - made this the finest performance from the second team seen in a few years that have featured some great games.
Saints were a tough team and shouldn't be written-off because of the score, lots of pre-season work from Kettering has brought us to a high level of hockey and many passages of play were remarkable for their intensity and panache. A local derby against Market Harborough 2s next weekend will round off the pre-season friendlies.
