Tough loss….

With a couple of minutes to go it looked like Kettering would gain their first point of the season but a yellow card and a deflected short corner deflated the visitors and they imploded to a 3-1 reverse.

Early skirmishes were fairly even. Cambridge’s quick and very skilful young player kept eventually running into a tackle but apart from that nothing much to report. We didn’t look much like scoring and neither did they. But they eventually did. A missed aerial was collected by a city forward whose initial shot was blocked by keeper Coe Snr but the rebound fell kindly to speedy youth who slotted home. Half time 1-0.

The second half followed a pretty similar pattern. Kettering content to knock it round the back with new boy Dean looking very comfortable in an unusual centre back position. Richard Campbell saw a green for knocking the ball away and on a breakaway into City territory George Hockley scored a “don’t shoot from there! Great goal” goal. 1-1 and all to play for. Could the visitors sneak a win? No. A short corner gave Millsy the opportunity to discuss the decision at length with the umpire until he got fed up and yellow carded him. The short saw Jake get a deflection that flew over the keeper. The third goal pretty much came because we’d conceded the second. Dribbly youth dribbled through the defence and scored.

Annoyed? Yes. An improvement from last week? Yes. Home to Spalding next week with returning skipper Donnelly picking from a full squad except long term crock Mark Hawkins.
