Disappointing result in Fenland.

On? Off? On? Off?
Eventually on but a delayed start as frozen weather claimed all the home games but away games seemed ok. So a 1230 start became a 100 start but still Ethan and Freddie couldn’t get there on time so we started with a bare eleven. The first team game being cancelled Spalding had a full 16 so the die seemed cast. They looked tidy in the warm up as we trudged onto the pitch 15 minutes before the start with the aim of just keeping warm.
Well, looks can be deceptive. Their warm up didn’t translate into match play and we were more than comfortable. We had a couple of chances, untaken (see multiple past match reports) and they had a couple of shorts. The umpire unfortunately played a terrible advantage as Spalding scored only for the whistle to go about 4 yards before it went in. Goal given but changed to a short after polite protestations. Fair play Mr Umpire, could easily have given it. As the half meandered to its conclusion Kettering switched off. The usually astute Mark didn’t put an aerial under pressure and there were suddenly two in ones all over the back line giving a Spalding forward an easy finish from the flick spot area.
Annoyed, Kettering started the second half brightly and a very weak Jacques shot was allowed to hit the post and the keeper booted the ball off the back line. The resulting short was saved but the rebound fell to Freddie who finished with aplomb. Two mid table teams huffed and puffed. Barry made a couple of saves, “TightMan” was impressive at the back again and Ellis again put in a proper shift and was unlucky not to get on the end of a flashing cross. Spalding broke the deadlock with 13 to go when a shot took a wicked deflection and looped into the top corner. Kettering had a chance to square the game but Costa Scott paid no heed to the agreed short corner routine and the chance had gone.
Other highlights of the second half were Paul slipping in the side of the pitch ( dangerous. Game awarded to Kettering?) and Jacques poleaxing a small child then laying on top of him.
A disappointing defeat where we were probably worth a point but there you go.
Adam Duell got man off the match for a solid defensive display. Craig got DoD as he Costa the game.
Next week we entertain highflying Wisbech who narrowly beat us 1-0 at their place.
Onwards and upwards.
