Bitter Pill To Swallow

Kettering turned up for this home game with a mix of 2nd and 3rd team players having had to cancel the 3s game due to a lack of players. However this did not prevent them from taking the game to Atherstone Adders from the off. With a combination of good passing and movement and a desire to receive the ball Kettering attacked the game with a confidence not seen in the first few matches. It seems the win the previous week had given them a level of faith in their ability.

However despite having the majority of the possession and the chances they were unable to breach the Atherstone goal and thus the first half ended with a lot of endeavour but little reward. The second half saw a change in the flow of the game. As the Kettering players tired the match became much more disjointed. Kettering still enjoyed the lions share of the possession but rarely troubled the Atherstone Goalkeeper. Midway through the half one of several breakaway attacks by Atherstone managed to scramble through the Kettering rearguard and then a poor shot somehow found its way through the goalkeepers legs to give Atherstone a goal.

Kettering valiantly pushed for an equaliser but found themselves lacking any real bite upfront with the three goal hero on the previous match feeding of scraps and unable to get any opportunities. The one goal was all it took for Atherstone to win a match that Kettering must feel was theirs for the taking.
