Kettering started he game quite brightly passing the ball quickly forward putting some pressure on the Atherstone 'D', but due to a combination of poor final pass and good defending struggled to really put the goalkeeper under pressure. A short corner after 10 minutes was slipped right from the top of the D, initially lost then regained but still no final shot. However a moment later he ball was once again in the Atherstone D, a tackle from a forward resulted in a pass across the middle of the D that pinged off an Atherstone foot and a Kettering foot before falling to Tim Coleby who calmly lifted it over the stranded keeper. A deserved 1-0 lead for Kettering.
Unfortunately despite much pressure in the first half it was Atherstone who managed to get a couple of scrappy goals to finish the first half 2-1 ahead. It had been a close half with much effort expended with title reward. The second half proved a slightly more one sided affair. It was Atherstone who saw more of the attacking opportunities and aggressively snuffed out any chances at their own end, sometimes too aggressively. They scored three goals as a result of their pressure. The best chances for Kettering came from fierce crosses from the right by Nick Cusk, that first Dominik Cusk and later Simon Chambers were unable to get a shot on.
The end result of 5-1 for Atherstone was probably a little unfair on Kettering for their first half endeavour but a reflection of Atherstones second half dominance.
