Kettering back on top!!

Kettering hosted Cambridge City 6's, not really knowing what to expect from a team that last year were tough opponents, but so far this year had shown some very inconsistent results.

Kettering once more had strength in numbers whilst the opposition looked a little more 'experienced', meaning the usual "work hard, and earn your 5 minutes off" was expected to work In Kettering's favour late in the game. Early exchanges were pretty even, with neither team really getting a stranglehold on the game, and some outstanding defence and goalkeeping kept the scores level for some time. However, once Kettering settled into their rhythm and found their passing game, the gaps started to appear, and a spell of pressure eventually told, with a ball across the 'D' beautifully volleyed home by Ollie Smith. Kettering had the better share of possession and chances after this, and some more crisp passing around the attacking third shortly after led to a simple pass into Simon Evans in space, who calmly slotted home. 2-0 at half time.

Kettering expected their opponents to tire, and would have expected this to be the start of the goals, however they were quickly shocked as an invigorated Cambridge side came out after half all guns blazing. Kettering were very much on the back foot, and can only thank man on the match Matt Coe, whose saves throughout the game (particularly from some short corners) very much kept Kettering in front. However, pressure soon told, and Cambridge did find that goal they were looking for to get them right back in the game.

This goal only spurred Kettering back to life though, and the passing game soon was back on track. This was typically signified by the third goal, in which almost every Kettering player had a touch of the ball, as it was passed around, starting from their own 'D', all the way up the pitch, for George York to slot home. Kettering still had time to find another goal through Simon Evans again, and even have a Jason Clarke goal disallowed for a (very obvious) back stick in the build up play by Sam Deprisco.

Kettering will take a lot from the game, not least the fact that some other results in the league on the day mean that they once again are at the top of the league. They will look to further cement their position next week, as they travel east for a very early start against current bottom side Peterborough 7's.
