A match report in the form of an acrostic poem
As the rain pelted down, freezing hands to sticks,
New territory beckoned, in the form of Bourne Deeping.
Off Kettering travelled, some without
Their shorts…
Hell freezing over couldn’t be as cold, yet
Every member of the Kettering squad
Revelled in the chance to win 3 points…
Lo’ the game began and Bourne were all
Over Kettering from the
Start, making Kettering look lacklustre.
Soon Bourne scored their first, with a drive down the left baseline,
Familiar to many as Kettering’s weakness, a brutal scramble led to the Kettering keeper stepping
Off the line to clear and a defender disposed just before the goal-line, through the
Roaming keeper’s outstretched legs. 1 -0.
Kicking themselves, the away team gritted their teeth, though
Even the spectators could see that they were on the backfoot.
There was simply some spark missing up front.
There were hardly any chances – Bourne were simply to sturdy.
Extreme pressure led to a second Bourne goal: a shot from the
Right finding the side netting with all the time in the world.
It came as no surprise, yet was a pain all the same,
Nothing Kettering did could hinder Bourne Deeping, who were being made to look
Good against a side who didn’t look like they’d turned up.
As half-time came and went, to none’s surprise,
Goal were all that were on Kettering’s mind.
A chance to get back in the game
Is all that they wanted.
Nay, yet it wasn’t to be as another Bourne goal
Smacked Kettering’s hopes
To somewhere afar.
But it wasn’t all doom,
Over to George York came the ball and
Under the keeper - he classically tapped
Running back to half-way, could this be the chance?
Now the score was 3 -1 but there was no way back – it was
Easy to see.
Dying was the clock when a short corner for Bourne that was
Executed to perfection after many failed attempts.
Even now, if the net hadn’t stopped it, would still be soaring now
Past Peterborough and still sailing upwards
Into the top right corner flew the Bourne rocket flicked.
Not one’s to begrudge a good
Goal, Kettering were impressed, but were now another one behind…
It wasn’t long since the short that the final whistle blew;
Not happy at all, Kettering walked off disappointed in
Themselves, knowing they were better than what they
Had shown. Drenched to the bone and shivering to the
Extreme, the
Changing rooms made for an icy atmosphere.
Over the shoulder, that game lies in the past,
Let’s focus on the next week, against Spalding 3s
Defeating them would be a nice win (at last!)
