5-3 win over rough opponents

So; we've left our best hockey until the penultimate game of the season when we're finally safe. Regardless, this was a cracking game - tense, tight and a tad ill-mannered. Cambridge City 5s turned up with a very strong forward line and a clear intent to pummel Kettering, yet the work ethic and smoothness of their opposition's play turned their game plan on its head. With Rickinho still out due to injury, Archie Colwill/Mike Lavender/Ollie Smith took up the mantle of temporary captain.
The game began. Kettering looked marvellous straight from pushback. The triangular system explained to us by Jess all those many months ago was actually noticeably working! Within a few minutes, Kettering were piling the pressure onto the Cambridge defence. A short-corner was quickly won - Adam Duell slammed it in, as usual... 1-0. Cambridge didn't lay down and die, though - in fact it is a credit to them that they were always breathing down Kettering's necks, despite never being ahead. A Cambridge forward managed to squeeze in a bizarre shot from the top of the 'D' to level the score - all accusations of stepping out of the way of the shot are entirely unfounded. Anyway, 1-1. More superb play from Kettering was squeezing the life out of CC5s; a brilliant sort-of-diving strike from the top of the 'D' by Jason Clarke caused the ball to curl into the bottom left corner - a majestic goal. 2-1. The K-Town onslaught then really began. Another short-corner meant another goal for Duell, though this time he was helped by Ben York in a slick move. Tom Storey then decided to lob the keeper in a crowded 'D' to put Kettering ahead by 4-1! - whilst he adamantly claims that his regular shot hit a defender's stick and then turned into a lob, we all know he's just being modest. The goal-fest didn't end there - but this time Kettering were to concede again; a scrappy goal that could have gone either way. This put the half-time score at 4-2.
It was time to kill the game when the second half began. Some to-ing and fro-ing couldn't yield any tangible results. Kettering then let another in - a Cambridge player completing his hat-trick. It was really edge-of-your-seat-seat-of-your-pants type play now. Adam Mills pulled out a genius move to stop an ariel finding the Cambridge goal-scorer; Archie spent the game getting nobbled by bandana-boy, but did manage to get his own back a few times; Richard Lashbrooke and Jack Bridges were tireless in their defensive efforts. Frankly, Kettering were desperate for another goal, just settle nerves. Five minutes prior to full-time, maybe-captain Lavender picked a beautiful pass to Tom Storey in the opposition's final third, a selfless pass to George York in the 'D' meant only one thing: 5-3. The game quickly finished - and what a game it was! In fact if anyone would like to relive it, just ask Ben and George's mum for the full footage!

MoM: Jack Bridges
DoD: Ben York - for having insults like a 5 year old
MAGIC MOMENT: Draw between Jason Clarke and Tom Storey; Jason given the hat because he didn't want it
