Kettering took on Cambridge South 4 in a well-balanced match at KLV. The home side were content to sit deep and hit Cambridge on the break with Harry Tanser and Peter Wenje doing great work holding up the ball and bringing team mates into the game.
When the visitors did get into the circle, keeper Gareth Tasker was on good form to clear the danger. A helping hand, in the shape of a goalpost, kept it 0-0 at half-time.
In the second half, Cambridge came on strong and a goalbound shot was stopped on the line by Richard Middleton. Fortunately, the resultant penalty flick was disallowed for hitting the ball.
Kettering had chances of their own, the best falling to Phil Coward but his shot rolled agonisingly wide.
The homes side weathered everything that was thrown at them, even playing with 10 men when Ben Smith was harshly yellow-carded.
Just when it looked like Kettering would win a hard-earned point, Cambridge pounced on a loose ball in the Kettering circle and scored with three minutes left to play.
Kettering can be very proud of a good, resolute team performance. Next week, alarm clocks need to be set for a 10am match away at St Neots 4.
