Ely 3rds conceded the match which means the Men's 3rd XI league season finished with somewhat of an anti-climax. The good news from a club perspective is that it guarantees that the 3rds finish second while the Men's 4th XI will finish no worse than ninth in the league.
The season for the 3rd team has been a tremendous success with the team playing a stylish, effective brand of hockey whilst at the same time developing the younger players.
A number of the youngsters (Jacob Tattersall, Ben Smith, Tom Storey and Ben York) have played for the 2nd XI throughout the season and Adam Mills also played for the 1st XI on a number of occasions. Not to forget Ethan Smart who was promoted to the 2nds midway through the season.
The only slightly disappointing aspect is that the team was not rewarded with promotion - the league rules stipulate that only one team is promoted.
Next season, we look forward to another tilt at league success and developing a new crop of up and coming players.
