Depleted Kettering Shown No Mercy

Kettering Ladies XI had their 2nd friendly since the Christmas break but this week faced a much stronger opposition in Rugby. With this bound to be a challenge it was a shame that the home side were missing a number of usual players. Huge credit to Becky Richardson who made her first team debut today, and to Mandy Starsmore-Young, Michelle Tanser, Sienna McNeil and Jess Henson for stepping up to ensure the game could go ahead. 

The start of the game was bright with Kettering putting the away side under pressure and making sure that play was broken down quickly. Rugby managed to take the lead after 20 minutes and followed this up with another 1 before the half time whistle. Despite the score line Kettering felt positive and recognised the positive efforts of the defense and that there had been opportunities to score.

Three players left at half time leaving Kettering further depleted with 12 players and as the second half progressed it was evident that fitness was a major difference between the two sides. As Kettering tired, Rugby continued to press forwards. They added to their tally from a penalty corner where a firm strike found its way through Nik Baker’s legs, and then another penalty corner tucked in to the near post soon followed. 

In the second half Kettering won a short corner. Hooray! An injection from Sophie Reynolds was struck firmly by Jess Clarke. Nailed it!

Unfortunately Toni Hustwait used her thumb to intercept a lifted hit which resulted in a broken bone and the home side being left with the bare 11. Tiring legs and dropping heads meant the side conceded another 5 goals. 

Kettering continue their preparation for the season next week against Loughborough Town.
