A last game victory secures Kettering's place in the league

Kettering ended their season with a superb performance that consolidated their place in the league. With points so close between other teams in the league Kettering knew they needed a win and the 15 strong side did not disappoint.
The home side were 2-0 ahead within the first 10 minutes of the game. The first goal came from a penalty corner that Laura Cave struck for player of the match (and Player of the Season), Sophie Reynolds to deflect past the keeper. The second goal came from some fine play down the right side of the pitch with Liz Metcalfe and Cath Irvin combining well to get the ball past the opposition. Irvin crossed the ball hard into the circle for a diving Linzi Webster to deflect past the far post. Kettering had their tails up and played some of their best hockey of the season so far and a 3rd goal came before half time with Irvin adding to the tally from her strike at a penalty corner.
After half time Stone attempted to press but Kettering stood firm and moved the ball quickly from their defence into attack. Another penalty corner rewarded the team with another goal but this time it was a scramble in front of the goal and eventually Meg Forader took advantage of the loose ball to play it into the goal through her own legs. Kettering's 4th goal was perhaps the most bizarre as Toni Hustwait drove into the circle with the ball and what was meant to be a pass to a team mate was left by the keeper and it rolled into the goal. The final goal came from Jess Austin who had picked the ball up at pace, was fouled but advantage was given and she smashed the ball away to ensure the emphatic victory.
This now means Kettering deservedly remain in this league and with a strengthening squad of players will no doubt produce successful performances next year. Thank you to all the supporters yesterday and finally to Coach, Julia Telford, and Goal Keeper, Kate Metcalfe, who step down to support the younger members of the club next year.
