This weekend saw Kettering Ladies XI take on Rugby Ladies XI in a hard fought contest. As the game started Rugby were quicker off the blocks and penetrated the circle within the first few minutes and if not for some strong defensive work would possibly have found themselves behind. However, as the game pace settled Kettering's work rate picked up and as a team worked hard across the pitch eventually earning themselves a penalty corner. Another slick routine saw Jess Austin strike the ball past the oncoming defenders straight into the goal which was a replica of last weeks goal against Worcester. Being in the lead at half time, albeit narrow, ensured that the ladies started the second half confidently. Player of the match, Charlie Fowle, put in a solid defensive display and the midfield worked tirelessly to create attack and to gain back possession. Kettering didn't want to make this game too easy for themselves and wanted to give the spectators an edge-of-the-seat performance by inviting pressure from the opposition. Some loose passing was quickly intercepted by the away side but the defence once again showed their superiority and ensured these attacks were nullified. In the last few minutes the away side thought they had drawn level as a strike from the top of the circle flew past everyone into the goal, only for it then to be disallowed due to an attacking player using their body to deflect the ball in.
Certainly a tense game that tested Kettering across the pitch but again should fill the team with confidence moving forward as they gained their second win of the season so far.
