Kettering unable to recovery from early setbacks.

Kettering 2 - 4 Olton
With cold, wet and windy conditions to combat with again this weekend, Kettering Ladies XI hoped to get back to their pre-Christmas winning ways against Olton. Unfortunately, Oltons much changed team from the first fixture were the ones that came out on top. The luck certainly doesn’t seem to be with Kettering at the moment as despite having more shots on goal than the visiting side the ball was just not finding its way through.
Olton started the game the quickest by immediately showing the home side that they had some extremely fast and skilful players in their team today. Kettering were pressed into their half for the first few minutes meaning Bethany Lewis and Laura Beacon had to make some important tackles to get Kettering a footing in the game. The home side soon started to move the ball forward with Maria Higgins putting their defence under pressure and Kettering unlucky not to take the lead as Megan Forader found Toni Hustwait in the circle whose shot was quickly closed down by an oncoming goalkeeper. It was Olton that took the lead as their star player took the ball past a number of Kettering players to come along the back line to then have a punt towards the goal where an unfortunate missed kick by Nik Baker in goal meant the ball found its way in. A second goal soon followed as Beacon found herself in a 2v1 situation at the top of the circle, with a missed tackle meaning they were through to dribble the ball past Baker and slot the ball away.
Kettering were determined that this game wasn’t out of reach and as the rain eased the efforts of the team increased. Drives forward from Hustwait and Forader on either side of the pitch meant the ball kept finding its way into the circle but no goals were coming. Olton scored their third as a dubious decision meant a free hit was awarded that was taken quickly by the away side and the shot found its way through Bakers legs to give them a seemingly comfortable lead.
Kettering finally found the goal as a string of slick passing starting with Beacon through to Cath Irvine put player of the match Emma Findlay in the perfect position to slot the ball away. This was the goal that the team needed so once again the gears were stepped up. Kettering’s pressure soon rewarded them with another penalty corner and it was vital they made this count with the time ticking away. Higgins found injector Hustwait on the post who slammed the ball past the defence to give the second goal. The draw was in sight but it just was not meant to be. A firm hit from the 25 yard line passed through a number of players to find an unmarked player sneaking through to the back post to deflect the ball in to the goal.
Kettering still hold 3rd place in the table for now but need to find their winning ways not only to keep promotion hopes alive, but also for team morale and confidence.
