Every year we raise money for two local charities. Both of this year’s have a strong hockey link.

As you know, every year we donate a percentage of our fundraising to two local charities. This year we have chosen two that, in very sad circumstances, both have a direct link to local hockey.

Our charities are We mind and Kelly matters, a charity set up in memory of Kelly Hewitt (a Grammarians player) and the Talbot Butler Award in memory of Becky Richardson (a Rothwell & Desborough player).

We mind and Kelly Matters was established after the sad death of Kelly Hewitt. Berni Westley, her Aunt, who we all know wrote -
Kelly was a sport loving girl right from an early age.
She loved to play and watch numerous sports and was a natural at the variety of sports she participated in.
She played football for Earls Barton girls and progressed into playing football into her late teens for Kettering ladies. She was a big fan of Arsenal too.
Cricket was a game where Kelly really shone, she was extremely successful in an all girls team at Wellingborough cricket club taking part in an all boys league , she played county cricket for Northants and was one of the first girls to be enrolled on Northants Cricket EPP - emerging players program for outstanding local cricketers . This led to her going on a cricket tour to India .
Kelly moved onto play a few games in the Men’s local league for Wellingborough town cricket club. She coached and managed youth teams at Wellingborough giving up her time to help develop and manage young players.
Kelly was involved in hockey from an early age initially playing as a youth for Wellingborough in the school age matches and then moved to play for Grammarians a team founded by her Mum and when she was old enough and played in the local league with her Mum and sister Amy , Kelly also took up umpiring and spent many a Saturday umpiring lots of local teams with her Auntie Berni . In the summer months Kelly played in the local rounders league and often was high up in the scoring charts for top scorer
Kelly held her family close to her heart and was a supporter of anything they did . She was fiercely protective of them and had many close friends. She had a kind heart, would help anyone out, had an infectious laugh and was mischievous! She would play hard at sport but shake hands at the end of a game and be happy to socialise afterwards. Her life revolved around sport and she played in many teams with close family members.
Kelly had many many friends from the large circle of sports she played and will always be held dear in their hearts and greatly missed my team mates

Our second charity is in memory of former Rothwell & Desborough, Wellingborough and latterly Wootton player Becky Richardson. Many of Becky’s former team mates at R&D are now club members at Kettering. Becky also played for Loughborough Town during her time at University. Becky sadly died last year after losing her battle with cancer. Becky was 29 years old. Becky initially had cervical cancer and was thought to be in remission but sadly the cancer returned and she was unable to respond to treatment. Funds we raise will go to the Talbot Butler Ward where Becky was treated.
Anyone who played hockey or socialised with Becky would describe her as a larger than life character who very much lived life to the full. In fact the social side was usually more important than the playing side but she was a competitive player who looked out for her teammates. She also spent many hours coaching juniors at Wellingborough.
Cervical screening (a smear test) checks the health of your cervix. The cervix is the opening to your womb from your vagina. It's not a test for cancer, it's a test to help prevent cancer. All women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 should be invited by letter. If you are in that age bracket and haven’t had a letter contact your local surgery.

Gents, let’s remember that prostate cancer affects 1 in 500 40yr olds, 1 in 50 in the 50s, 1 in 14 60 yr olds and 1 in 9 over 70. If in doubt, check it out.
