New boy Ewen Scholtz bagged a brace to set Kettering on the way to a narrow win against old rivals Atherstone Adders.
Kettering started brightly dominating possession and territory and opened the scoring early on when new boy Ewen Scholtz fired home from a short corner breakdown. Finn Smith, whose pace was causing the Adders problems, looked lively up front but it was Scholtz who was on hand to get his second after a goalmouth scramble. The adders pulled a goal back following a short corner that will have the home defence looking hard into why this happened at training this week.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Kettering on top but Adders looking dangerous. Smith scored to give Kettering what looked like a comfortable lead and he will be disappointed not to have added to his tally whilst Scholtz had a good opportunity for his hat trick. Adders weren’t finished though and an initially saved shot was only cleared against an Adders forward’s stick to nestle in the bottom corner. Adders had a great chance to snatch a draw when a poorly executed short corner caused confusion in the home ranks and the umpire awarded a penalty stroke just as the ball (probably!?!) went in. Fortunately for Kettering the penalty went high and wide. Keeper Barry Coe mad a smart save late on but Kettering just about deserved the spoils.
Captain Ollie Smith was pleased with the performance, “we had a few new players in today but that shows the current strength of the club. Next week we face a real test at Oundle and it will be interesting to see how the players respond to the challenge.”
