L3s travelled what is beginning to feel like a very familiar route to the Cambridge university ground on a blustery afternoon for a 4pm pushback. We faced a Cambridge City team which was billed as 6th team but did seem to have a fair mixture of players who might well have been playing for higher teams. The game was very even and well fought throughout the first half. Cambridge had a few quick and skilful players whom we soon identified we needed to shut down and prevent them dribbling through. Our defensive line up of Telf, Jill, Lou and Kate was solid and covered each other really well so that Cambridge never really threatened. Poppy, playing her second game of the day in goal, was not often called upon but made strong clearances when they did get a shot on goal. Nat, also playing her second game of the day, and Lydia worked tirelessly midfield and we had a lot of the attacking play although their defence were strong and prevented us from getting many opportunities to shoot.
The second half was more of the same, there was a short period when Cambridge looked threatening and spent more time in our D but then we really upped the pace in the last 15 minutes and linked up with some lovely passing to get the ball up to Erin and Connie who had some good chances to score. It seemed that we must surely score, especially when Laura swept a lovely ball hard to the corner of the goal - only to see it hit the post. So the game ended goalless, although we felt that the quality of our play, particularly in the last quarter really should have earnt us a win and number one supporter Kate Metcalfe declared a 'moral victory'. Great play by all, with a special mention for Tilly and Connie who stepped up from the L4s and made good contributions.
