The Invincibles

Stuart Mitchell15 Mar - 17:02

Kettering M4 VRs Bourne Deeping 5

Due a bizarrely situation this was our last game of the season, where as the other teams in the league will play one more game than us….doesn’t make sense to me either. Whatever happens regarding promotion, again potentially might not get promoted, the one thing they could not take away from us is going unbeaten for the season (League or friendlies) should we not lose this game.
As usual we started on the front foot with lots of possession, and territory up the pitch. Although our final ball was a bit lacking, and our shorts came to nothing. Obviously our central defence partnership thought that they better show the attackers what to do. So finally, after 23 min Stu P picked the ball up on the half way line, after a through ball from Martin, drove to the D, pulled the trigger and scored. 1:0 at half time.
The second half was much the same, plenty of possession and territory but no final result. Finally our pressure paid off, when Shaun squared the ball passed the keeper to Doug to slot home. 2 became 3 not long after Doug became provider for Ben J to secure the points. A rare attack by Bourne resulted in a short corner but Nate still had nothing to do as our number 1 and 2 runners snuffled out any opportunity.
As captain, it been a privilege to play with and captain this team, at the beginning of the season I vowed to have 3 under 16s in each squad to give them the opportunity. More fool me, it quickly became apparent that we have an amazing large group of u16 with many being the first names on the team sheet. Most of our games we have taken 7 or 8 and our final game saw the ratio of 6 adults-9 U16 players and probably was one of the strongest teams we fielded. The club future is looking bright. So that said I was determined to finish the season on the pitch with the team (despite being injured yet again) so with a minute to go I brought myself on for a literally last minute cameo.
The final whistle blew and we had done it unbeaten for the season. Forever immortalised as “The Invincibles”

Player of the Match – Doug– a goal, and assist, and after the first 15minutes finally realised that he could get turn over ball from their 16 hit outs if he put pressure on the taker, and then was a constant menace for the rest of the game. But as he didn’t coming back to the club house MOM was therefore awarded to the four players that were joint second place although two, Stan and Stu P didn’t coming back either, so it fell to Ben J and Paul to pick up the honours.
D0D – Stu P, Doug and Stan for not coming back to the club house celebrations!
Champagne moment – Post Match Champagne (well; lemonade, non-acholic sparkling and a random bottle of prosecco!)
Captain’s mention – Every single player who have played for 4s this season, whether for 1 game or 20 you have all contributed to the success and share in obtaining “The Invincibles” tag for 2025-2026 session. I thank you all. As I do for the parent your support at the sidelines and taxi service is invaluable and you all are equally part of this success. And finally to our coaches Nick and Dom for getting us ready for match days, couldn’t done it without you both either.
