
The Development XI travelled into this intra-club league fixture knowing they were up against one of the strongest sides in the division. The 4th team sit near the top of the table, pushing for promotion, with a squad full of experience, physicality and depth. In contrast, the Development XI featured just a handful of senior players including two of which with hip replacements and one with a knee bolted together, surrounded by a young group still learning the men’s game.
Despite the difference on paper, the boys delivered an outstanding first-half performance. The match plan was clear: stay compact, protect the central areas, and frustrate a more seasoned opposition. Every single youngster carried out the formation and instructions exactly as asked, showing a fantastic attitude and maturity. With disciplined positioning, excellent tracking back and calm decision-making on the ball, the Development XI held firm and went into half-time level at 0–0 — a huge credit to their focus and work-rate.
As legs tired in the second half, the 4s eventually broke through with their experience and rotations, scored their opening goal - greeted by skipper Stu with a large sigh of relief. The scoreline doesn’t reflect the character, organisation or commitment shown by the Development XI. This was a performance full of resilience and togetherness, proving that when the game plan is followed and the team works for each other, they can compete with anyone in the league”
