A hastily arranged game saw Supernovas take to the field for the very first time. An interesting split saw effectively a team with 2 defenders in the team and 13 attacking minded (mostly forwards or wingers) and me back in goal (last time was last September) meant not only were we playing together for the first time but many players were to play out of position, not to mention an average age of our out field of about 19.
Oddbods started well, and our makeshift defence were put under a lot of pressure but held up admirably for the first 20. Then, and I knew I should have made him stay at home and revise, an annoying 16 (yes my son) drove into the box and smashed it into the top corner. 1 became 2 when I inexplicably went wondering around my D and left an easy tap in a the back post. However, co-captains for the match Bruno and Bethany, showed the way, Bruno tenacious in the centre of midfield won the ball followed by some lovely team passing for Bethany to score Supernovas very first (of many hopefully) goal. 2:1 at half time.
Second half began and soon again I was ruefully regretting the decision to let him play, this time, keepers worse nightmare as he nutmegged me. Soon after and Oddbods scored a fourth, again through my legs - this time I’d argue that I was set for the deflection off the attacker just in front of me but he completely missed the ball and it trickled under his stick and between my legs- DoD secured by me. What was great to see was the energy levels and commitment of the team didn’t drop. We nearly pulled one back when Sam went on a mazy run, outfoxing (outpacing really) our O55 Captain fantastic turned traitor Neil (playing for to help there numbers) but pulled his shot wide.
So our first game resulted in a loss but lots to be proud off, looking forward to next week, as long as I remember to keep my legs shut!
Player of the match: Lucy F great defensive display and in driving forward up the wing.
Thank to Nick for umpiring, and to Dom for emergency umpiring the first half, and Justin for running the bench.
