Something was different in the air this morning as Kettering warmed up to prepare themselves for this week fixture. After a rather unsuccessful season thus far, the point-less side followed this initial whistle with renewed vigour. The game began a fairly even affair with end-to-end play although Kettering saw some success from winning the ball high up the pitch, earning several penalty-corners but none bearing fruit. An early green card for Dom – unnoticed by several of the team – saw Kettering down to 10 but Bury were unable to pervade the Kettering D. As the half went on, Kettering’s familiarity with dunes of Bishop Stopford showed as another penalty corner in the late stages of the half saw returning legend Lewis Pywell volley one into the net off the rebound to put the home side ahead 1-0 as the first half concluded despite an earlier injury to the shoulder.
The second half saw no lack of energy from Kettering, although Bury strained Kettering’s out letting at times with high pressure. Kettering’s own ceaseless pressure saw them win multiple penalty-corners as the game progress and eventually it was Andy Sellers who’s quick reaction to another rebound secured the home side a 2 goal lead. Not long later, Tom Storey slotted a ball into the D to convincingly put the home side into a winning position and Kettering were able to take home 3 points to the cheers and elations of the crowd.
Next week they pack their bags for any odyssey to the far reaches of the East to face Felixstowe.
