In a game that had nil nil written all over it Kettering contrived to make a couple of mistakes that cost them.
In bright sunshine and after a fevered on line debate about blue or white kit against the light blue of St Neots Kettering actually started the brighter. Ethan Roberts had a good chance at the far post and Mark Hawkins, in a move back up top due to unavailable forwards, fired wide. St Neots had a couple of chances but by and large the game was contested in midfield. Both teams were content to let the other play it around the back and the first half pretty much petered out with no real big chances.
The second half was following the same pattern until a misunderstanding between Brookesy and skipper Donnelly at an attacking long corner saw a free hit defence and some chap dribbled 75 yds virtually unopposed and scored via a spinner off the far post. Fine margins etc. Despite having plenty of ball Kettering failed to really make the home keeper work hard enough. Brookes had a good chance from a short corner but squeezed the ball wide. Another decision in their defensive 23 was contested by the visitors, upgraded to a short, and following a melee found its way in. 2-0 game over. Kettering had a last chance short to get on the score sheet but couldn’t force the ball home.
A disappointing day at the office that Kettering will be looking to put right next week. At least the sun shone.
Post match pizzas were decent. (4 large Dominoes, various toppings). Post match atmosphere in the brutalist 6th form basement non existent highlighted by most of the opposition leaving before our players even arrived. We always try to see the opposition out of there clubhouse and this was an easy three points!
Onwards and hopefully upwards.
