What a strange weekend of games.
Selection was stretched to the max and in all honesty we were lucky that the 4s had a bye as the 2s ‘borrowed’ 5 of their players and the 3s had a few also.
With the 3s pulling off a sensational win against leaders Camb City 5 the 2s knew that a win would put them right in the mix.
With Dean, Ollie, Ethan, Craig, Lash and Millsy all unavailable up stepped evergreen Paul Brooker, Shaun Curtis, Dan Carter and u14s Tom Smith and Sam Hawkins from the 4s. A quick run through how the 2s play and we were off. A great start, forcing the Wisbech keeper into a couple of saves and after about 15 mins Charlie took the ball into the D and smashed the ball home. With the pitch playing well, bar a couple of slippy bits Kettering looked quite comfortable but were caught on the break and although Barry saved the initial cross a prone player bundled it home. One for you umpires here - can you score when sitting on the floor? Anyway, half-time 1-1 and Kettering pleased with their efforts.
More of the same required second half and after 5 minutes a beautifully weighed ball saw Joe attack the base line and cross to on fire striker Sam who buried his shot.
Wisbech lost a couple of players for clumsy tackles and Kettering skipper Paul also took a couple of minutes break ( accidentally called on early by Mark and duly sent back off again - amateurish!). Kettering were unable to extend their lead despite forcing a few short and Sam H played one lovely ball through to Charlie who wasn’t expecting it! The second half fairly whizzed by and with two mins to go Wisbech forced a short. The initial short begat another and Kettering were determined not to let their advantage slip. Barry saved the first strike and then a trademark ‘up periscope’ foiled the follow up. Kettering saw out the remaining few seconds to register a fantastic result. Credit to the lads who stepped up especially Dan who put in a tremendous shift to gain MoM.
A rearranged trip to Newmarket next week looking to build on an 8th straight win.
