“One nil to the Kettering 2s”
Is coach Ben Mills turning into George Graham circa 1992. After last week’s 1-0 victory at Camb Uni it was Spalding who this week met the unmoveable object that is the Kettering 2s defence and succumbed to a one goal defeat. Today that was a defence shorn of skipper and top tackler Dean with a hip injury allegedly acquired reaching to top shelf at Aldi so the unmoveable defence of Hawkins Snr, Smith J, Mills B and Donnelly took to the field.
The early stages were fairly cagey as befits a league where, with the exception of Pelicans and possibly the Students there isn’t much between any of the sides.
The game was effectively decided by one moment of real quality. In fairness it was a very good ‘one’. The Duracell bunny that was Adam Mills absolutely smashed a reverse stick shot top bins. No goalie is saving that.
Spalding probably had a bit more ball than Kettering but really didn’t do much with it. Kettering however created plenty of chances that on another day might have gone in.
Mills blotted his copybook when he was green carded for rather cynically breaking down play.
The second half followed a very similar pattern. Kettering butchered a number of good opportunities and this meant the game was still finely balanced. It wasn’t until the 65th minute that keeper Barry had to make his first, and only, save from Spalding’s first team centre back who saw his drag flick well saved and then cleared by Jamie.
Kettering saw out the remaining few minutes with no scares and now sit comfortably in 3rd place with five games to go. The #safebyChristmas has turned into #3rdwouldbeagreatresultwedontreallywanttogoup
Next week we get the week off as we played in the Frozen game so next up are Peterborough 4s in a fixture moved to Oundle School.
Can it be three 1-0s on the trot?
