Given that at the start of the season the 2s were looking at a 4-8th finish and securing safety in 3NW after promotion being in 3rd with 2 games to go and virtually guaranteed a top four finish is a testament to how well the team has played.
With Brookes, Donnelly, Hawkins jnr, Singodia and Singh missing the team were still good enough to battle hard for a well deserved point at Wisbech.
A chilly fenland day saw Kettering take the game to Wisbech. This time Wisbech at least played a more expansive style of game rather than the sit back a sneak a goal tactic they used to win at Kettering. They also took the lead when a misplaced Dan Carter clearance found the Wisbech centre forward who made a pass for an easy finish. Things then went from bad to worse as just before the break a powerful shot went through keeper Coe. Were alarm bells ringing in the Kettering ranks? In previous years we might have struggled to come back from this but this second team is made of sterner stuff. Keep playing the right was and the goals will come. And they did. First through a well worked short corner that saw Jamie Smith fire home across the keeper. Smith the blotted his copybook (or did he) as he was green carded for and incident that saw a Wisbech player go as well. If Adam Mills had any integrity he would have owned up that it was indeed him that transgressed but meanly let Jamie take the rap. Barry redeemed himself with a fine deflection of a thunderbolt shot onto the post and Kettering sensed they could get something out of the game. With 5 to go a Wisbech player saw only green for a sliding tackle. Could Kettering take advantage? Yes they could. They forced a flurry of short corners and after a melee Ben Mills was on hand to coolly reverse stick flick the ball home in the old school upright manner rather than flashy tomahawk.
Honours even at 2-2 but our point tasted sweeter than theirs. Somehow we managed to trigger the fire alarm in the showers but thankfully for the Fenland natives we didn't muster in the car park in various states of undress. Ben somehow claimed the DoD award despite scoring the crucial goal after a wave of tactical voting from the travelling fans. Jamie claimed his second consecutive MoM. Yet again the scoring defenders bailed out the profligate forwards!!
This is the second time this season the 2s have come back from 0-2 to grab a point (and once from 0-3).

Next week sees the visit of St Ives who are 6th and safe from the drop. With two weeks to go the promotion places are already secured for Pelicans and Camb Uni but at the bottom it is all to play for as 5 teams are still in danger with the big game Cambridge South at home to Spalding, a game Spalding really must win.
